Color Club Seven Deadly Sins Swatches

Hey all!

My parents were in town, so I decided to delight them with the wonder that is the Christmas Tree Shops. (Man, I hate the built-in plural of that name.) While I was there, I came across Color Club's Seven Deadly Sins collection. There were eight beautiful polishes in the display for $7.79 each. I had read of a Color Club price hike, and these were definitely a lot more expensive than the core collection which still costs about four bucks and some change. After I got them home and tried them on, I saw that these are textured polishes, which I suspected from the bottles and display. I really hate that some brands don't clearly indicate a textured polish, but I still ended up liking these and find myself inspired to try more!

Hey guys,

I ran into this display the other day at Christmas Tree Shops and wanted to share. I will post swatches of the ones I purchased in a separate entry!

#TBT with OPI My Private Jet (the "Dud" Version)

Hey all!

Just a quick #TBT with OPI's My Private Jet. I  never did own this one in its non-dud version, but I think the dud is pretty exceptional itself.  It's understated yet still has that special something to keep it interesting. To me, the holo is pretty subdued and quite similar to the one you see in OPI DS Classic.

Pretty, ain't she?  I wonder why this was never a DS shade, honestly.  The formula is a perfect two-coater that also happens to be a great bridge to those autumn colors I think we all are craving!

Wet n Wild Fantasy Makers 2014 Nail Polish Collection

Hi, all!

I'm super pumped about all the Halloween collections that I'm starting to see in stores.  I managed to pick up the polishes from Wet n Wild's Fantasy Makers for 2014.  These looked pretty hum drum in the bottles, but I was pleasantly surprised once I get them on... JELLIES, people.

Wet n Wild Fantasy Makers 2014 Bottle Shots

First, we have Ghouls Rush In, a lovely bright pink jelly.  This one went on beautifully in two coats.

DH's color description: "Amish pickled eggs."  [Uh, yeah.  I think he means the beet pickled ones.]

Next, we've got Goosebump Suit, a bright orange jelly.  It went on nicely in two coats, and surprisingly, I did not hate this orange on my fair skin.  This would be extra awesome on deeper skin tones.

DH's color description: "Traffic vest and/or cone or something."

We've also got Queen of Envy, which looks kelly green in the bottle but a touch lighter and brighter on the nail.  This one was a bit more transparent and tricky than the other formulas.  I used four coats to even it out.

DH's description: "Gak."

The next color is Roach Busters.  This one is a bright yellow green with subtle orangey-red shimmer throughout.  I didn't detect any hint of shimmer in the bottle, so I was quite surprised to see it coming out fairly strongly in the sun.  No problems with application; it's shown below with two easy coats.

DH's description: "The drink from Star Trek...  Aldebaran Whiskey."

There's also a glow in the dark top coat in this collection cleverly named Glo' Money, Glo' Problems.  It didn't change the appearance of Roach Busters when I layered it on, and I applied three thick coats in the hopes of achieving a really strong glow effect.  When I initially went into the closet to check out the glow properties, I saw nothing but darkness.  I remember "charging" a lot of my glow in the dark toys in the light when I was little, so I tried the same with the polish...

Wet n Wild Fantasy Makers 2014 Glo Money Glo Problems Nail Polish
...Et voila!

Wet n Wild Fantasy Makers 2014 Glo Money Glo Problems Nail Polish

This is the best photo I could capture.  It does definitely glow after some time under the light, but it fades rather quickly, so I would not plan on glowing all night long with this one.  I recall trying to paint my tennis shoes with glow in the dark nail polish in high school with similarly temporary effects.  It's still kinda neat though.

There's also a re-promote of Wet n Wild's appropriately famous one-coat wonder, Black Creme, in this collection in addition to tons of other fun Halloweeny cosmetics (I also snagged the glittery black liquid liner!).  I was pleasantly surprised by this collection, which you can find most anywhere that sells Wet n Wild.  I've seen it out at Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and K-Mart at this point.

Which Fantasy Makers are your favorites this year?!

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure New York Fashion Week (NYFW) 2014

Hey all,

I just picked up four polishes from the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure NYFW at Kmart the other day.  They have three sets of polishes in this collection: Fall Pastels (five pastel cremes), Glam Sequins (five glitters including two shard glitters and a hybrid), and Dark Romance (five deep fall cremes).  I decided not to pick up any of the Fall Pastels because I've had my fill of anything that even smells like a summery shade and am totally ready to dive head first into autumn! I ended up with Rupee Red from Dark Romance and Pink Dream, Golden Rust, and Shattered Stars from Glam Sequins.

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure New York Fashion Week NYFW 2014
L-R: Rupee Red, Pink Dream, Golden Rust, Shattered Stars
First up, Rupee Red.  I realized a few months ago that I have very few vampy colors and have been trying to augment my stash; I think this is a pretty good start. Rupee Red is a very pretty burgundy wine color that could almost be a one coater.  I did two because I generally apply polish in thin coats.  Application is nice and easy.

The next polish, Pink Dream, is probably my favorite of the ones I picked up.  It looks very orange in the bottle despite the name. It's a slightly tinted pinky orange base with hexagonal and smaller round glitter pieces.  The glitter reflects orange, gold, green, and yellow... It reminds me a bit of Mardi Gras.  It's shown below in two coats on top of both Rupee Red and Wet'n'Wild Black Creme in overcast outdoor light. I think this looks pretty amazing layered over dark polishes, but I suspect it's equally interesting over lighter shades (perhaps followed by a matte top coat).

And just for fun, DH's description of the polish: "It looks like what a mermaid would have or something."

The sun makes a brief appearance.
The third polish I picked up is Golden Rust.  This one looks like fall in a bottle... and/or root beer.  It's a brown jelly with gold hexagonal glitter and smaller round glitter.  I applied three coats to achieve the opacity shown in the photos.  Formula went on with ease.  I'm still not sure how I feel about this against my skin tone, but I think I like it.  (For reference, I'm Illamasqua RLF 115 & SB 2; Nars Siberia.)

Finally, we have Shattered Stars, which is a silver shard glitter.  I was skeptical about this one because the chaos of shard shaped glitter usually unsettles me, but I'm glad I bought this one.  It turned out to be pretty cute!  I layered two coats over China Glaze First Mate.  I think this would look even more amazing over a deep navy polish (I have zero of these for some reason).

Overall, I think this is a really nice collection. I would have bought more, but quite honestly, the eight dollar price tag for a drugstore polish deterred me... especially because I just bought a bunch of Illamasqua polishes of the Illamasqua site for $8.11. If I see a coupon or a sale, though, I may pick up a few more!

What do you think of this collection?  Worth the hefty (relatively speaking) drugstore price tag?

Sally Hansen Color Foil in Cobalt Chrome + Sephora by OPI Meet Me at the Disco

Hey all,

I can't stop playing with these Sally Hansen Color Foils.  I happened to find this one, Cobalt Chrome,on clearance at Target the other week.  I paired it with Sephora by OPI Meet Me at the Disco, a really fun silver holographic glitter.

Sally Hansen Color Foil Cobalt Chrome Sephora by OPI Meet Me at the Disco

As per usual, I adore this Color Foil polish.  It's so beautifully metallic and shiny, and it happens to remind me of a pair of heels one of my Barbie dolls used to own (you know, the ones they used to make that never quite fit their feet and just immediately flopped off at the heel the instant you put them on).  Meet Me at the Disco was also amazing.  I layered on three coats, and it was completely opaque.  It was a rainy, overcast day when I took this picture.  You can see the holographic magic in the bottle despite the cloudy skies.  I'm really disappointed I didn't get a sun shot.  I know it would just rainbow glow like crazy!

Thanks for reading!

China Glaze All Aboard Fall 2014

Hey all,

I've got some swatches from the China Glaze All Aboard Collection to show you today.  I picked up Lug Your Designer Baggage, Mind the Gap, Loco-motive, and Choo-Choo Choose You.  I have to admit that just based on the pictures of the bottles that I found on the internet, I was a bit underwhelmed.  I am happy to say that, despite my initial impressions, this collection has some really awesome polishes!

China Glaze All Aboard (L-R): Mind the Gap, Lug Your Designer Baggage, Loco-motive, Choo-Choo Choose You
China Glaze All Aboard (L-R): Mind the Gap, Lug Your Designer Baggage, Loco-motive, and Choo-Choo Choose You
Mind the Gap is a mid-tone taupe with green gold shimmer.  It went on easily in two coats for the opacity pictured below.  To me, it looks like Mac Old Gold Pigment had a lovechild with some clear polish.  Beautiful!

Lug Your Designer Baggage is a chocolate brown with lighter beige flakies and a copper microshimmer.  I'm a little wary of brown on my nails against my very fair skin (Illamasqua SB 2 for reference), but it was so pretty in the bottle that I had to take a chance.  The formula went on with no problems in two coats.  I was pleasantly surprised with this brown.  I think it will be a great fall color, and I suspect it would look even better on darker skin tones.  (Sorry, the shade picture went insane with shiny top coat.)

Loco-motive is a moderately dense steel grey glitter with larger round pieces of red and copper glitter.  I really thought this one would be a stand-alone polish based on the bottle.  That said, I had to pile on five coats for the opacity in the photo, and my nail lines still show through.  It's still pretty, but it takes some work.  I also applied one thick coat over Canmake #59 to show what it looks like as a topper.

Choo-Choo Choose You is plummy purple base with holographic shimmer that reflects orange and green.  This one, in my opinion, is the star of this collection.  I usually hate purple on my nails, but I am so glad I took a chance on this one.  It is absolutely beautiful!  It's quite the shape shifter and seems like it has its own coat of unicorn pee built right in.  Yessss!!!!  Amazing.

Illamasqua Bacterium

Hey, everyone,

Last night, I was scouring my stash for a kind-of-neutral yet interesting nail polish.  I let DH choose (risky business, so I retain veto power), and he decided on Illamasqua Bacterium.  Illamasqua describes this shade as "pearlescent ash ochre."  I'd say that's pretty apt.  While the formula went on slightly brushstrokey, it otherwise applied very, very nicely.  The brushstrokes aren't noticeable when it dries, in my opinion.

Illamasqua Bacterium

Unfortunately, the weather has been extremely rainy lately, so I wasn't able to catch this one in sunlight.  This one can deepen in color when the light hits it just right.  I've always been a fan of Illamasqua polishes, some of which happen to be discounted almost 50% right now at their website

What are your favorite neutral-with-a-twist polishes?

Naild It Light Show

Ok, so I'm about to do something that might be super mean.

This is an old Naild It polish.  I know this because this is label 2.0 (or maybe more?), and I know there's at least one more recent version.  I searched online, and I don't see that this one is available any longer.  So, if you like this one and wish to purchase it, I'm really sorry.

Now on to the polish!  It's a really dense silver holographic microglitter with blue, orange, pink, flourescent yellow, and black pieces of larger glitter.  The black glitter is long bar glitter and diamonds, but not a lot comes out on the nail.  It almost looks a little lavender-ish, but I generally dislike purple, so that can't be right, can it?  Because I do like this polish!  It took four coats for the opacity shown in the photos followed by two coats of Gelous and one of Seche Vite.

Naild It Light Show
Naild It Light Show, shade and sun
I love this one!  It was just what I needed... a soft, summery shade with a little sparkle and excitement.  I have a lot of polishes from this brand, and most are untried.  You can purchase them here if you're interested!

How 'bout you?  Have you tried out the brand?

Orly FX Intergalactic Space + Sally Hansen Color Foil Rose Copper

Hi, everyone!

I've been on a bit of an Orly kick lately, and I wanted to show you Orly FX Intergalactic Space.  It's a black jelly with small purple and copper glitter, larger round white glitter, and a blue microshimmer throughout.  There's so much of the blue shimmer that to me it reads navy blue on the nail.  It's a really pretty effect, although for me the white glitter hid inside the bottle.  I don't think I got any of it on my nails.  The formula was a little thick, but it can always be thinned if that's a bother.  I used four coats, two coats of Gelous to smooth, and a coat of Seche Vite to give it a nice shine.

I also used Sally Hansen Color Foil in Rose Copper because I am in love with all the Color Foils!  This is no exception.  It looks a little more gold in some lighting than rose copper, but I don't care.  It's amazing all the same.  And here are the pics!

Orly Intergalactic Space and Sally Hansen Color Foil Rose Copper Nail Polish
Orly Intergalactic Space + Sally Hansen Color Foil Rose Copper, shade and sun
I have loved all the Orly FX polishes that I have tried so far, and I've managed to get the majority of them on clearance at Sally.  Am I alone in this opinion?  They are fantastic!

Which are your favorite Orly polishes?  I need to prepare for the next time they go on sale at Sally!

Orly Nite Owl

Hey all,

Last week, I decided to pull out Orly Nite Owl, an untried for me.  I picked it up as the third polish of a buy two get two free sale at Sally figuring it was a nice taupey neutral with an interesting silver shimmer.  It went on easily and did not disappoint!

Orly Nite Owl Nail Polish

Ok, someday I will get better at consistent hand posing.  But isn't it pretty?  And perhaps because both "Orly" and "owl" are involved in the name of the polish, the O RLY? meme instantly springs to mind.

What are your favorite neutrals-with-a-twist?

Sally Hansen Color Foil in 440 Titanium Flush

Hey everyone,

Let me just tell you I am super pumped about the Color Foils.  Yes, I'm a little late to this party, but I bought them back in May, swatched them, and thought, "Wow, what an abysmal mess."  Chromey finishes are really tricky to apply.  The ladies on Makeupalley Nail Board gave some great tips for application though, and this is the result:

Sally Hansen Color Foil 440 Titanium Flush Chrome Nail Polish
Sally Hansen Color Foil 440 Titanium Flush

BE STILL, MY BEATING HEART! (Yes, I am yelling that... and btw, the accent nail is Orly FX Silver Pixel.)

So here are the reasons I initially hated the Color Foils and how to fix it:

1) The color goes on this weird magenta and silver.  I mean, two different colors are sitting there on your nail, and it's nothing like the color of the bottle.  **REMEDY - Shake the bottle like you've never shaken a bottle before.  Normally this is an awful bubble-producing idea, but not with these chromes.  I swatched mine on a piece of paper to make sure the color was uniform before I applied to the nail.

2) The color just doesn't go on smoothly... Every little ridge in your nail becomes super prominent, and that is ugly.  **REMEDY - Apply over an existing manicure.  Or get some ridge filler and top coat on there first.

3) Patchy baldness... Ugh.  **REMEDY - I apply this one like I apply Seche Vite.  I get a generous amount on the brush (more than I normally do but not so much that you're flooding then nail) and float it over the top of the nail... and quickly.  It turns out less brush-strokey this way, and once it dries, it will look nice and smooth.

4) Top coat uncertainty.  Should I use one at all?  **REMEDY - Honestly, I don't think it much matters.  I applied above with a coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri top coat only to make sure it was totally dry before I went to bed.  I didn't do this immediately, though, and it seemed to dry pretty quickly on its own, and I don't think the top coat made a difference in the appearance.  So basically, that part is up to you!

Now that I have it on, I find myself wishing I bought more than the three that I did.  I will note that I do have a small chip this morning.  I get the impression that the wear time on these is similar to that of magnetic polishes; i.e., not quite as long as the usual polish.  It's so darn pretty that I don't care, though.  Seriously.  I have been looking at my nails constantly because the effect is that cool.

What do you guys think?  Are there any other chromes that you like? (seeing as how I will need to feed this new addiction :/)

Zoya Dot, Orly FX Silver Pixel, and China Glaze Fairy Dust

Hi all,

Last night I was in the mood for pale pink but wanted to add some pizazz.  I decided to add Orly FX Silver Pixel (also seen in my recent 4th of July mani) because it is such an easy and amazing two coater.  I have no idea why I was able to get it on clearance plus 50% off at Sally.  Then I added some Fairy Dust because Fairy Dust. #fairydustallthethings

Zoya Dot Orly FX Silver Pixel China Glaze Fairy Dust Nail Polish NOTD
Zoya Dot + Orly Silver Pixel + China Glaze Fairy Dust
Zoya Dot is a great pale pink... Definitely an office appropriate color and downright cute besides.  It's shown with three coats above plus three coats fairy dust... Is that excessive?  No. (See supra #fairydustallthethings).

What are your favorite color combos?  And which accent fingers?  These are things that are at times beyond my creativity level.

OPI Designer Series DS Classic

Hey everyone,

Today I've got OPI DS Classic to show you!  This is actually the first DS I've ever worn, although not the first I've ever purchased.  The first was probably in 2011 when I bought one while traveling (don't remember which one anymore).  Somehow this polish made it into a sock in my suitcase and never made it out.  Vanished off the face of the earth.  I don't know how this stuff happens because I always thought matter could not be destroyed... although a physicist family member pointed out that it can be destroyed by antimatter.  So perhaps there is an anti-DS polish that somehow collided with my DS polish in transit.  This is the only reasonable explanation that I can muster.

ANYWAY.  Here's some pics:

OPI Designer Series DS Classic Holographic Nail Polish
L to R: OPI DS Classic sun, shade
This is a scattered holographic polish, but this one really isn't a strong holo at all.  I took some more pics to try to get it to show up, and this is the best I could do:

OPI Designer Series DS Classic Holographic Nail Polish
OPI DS Classic Holographic Properties
Although not the clearest photo, you can see some of those rainbow particles.  I think this is pretty true to life, too, as it's a pretty subtle scattered holo.

What are your favorite DS polishes?  I'm thinking of expanding my collection...

Dollish Polish The Koopa King + OPI Germanicure

Hey all,

Here's an oldie but a goodie... Dollish Polish The Koopa King layered over OPI Germanicure.  I think this is one of my favorite manis I've done in my whole history of polish obsession.  For some reason I haven't recreated it, but it probably has something to do with the shameful number of untrieds living in my Melmers.

Dollish Polish The Koopa King over OPI Germanicure

I feel like we've been entrenched in summer forever, even though I know it technically only started a couple weeks ago.  I miss the cooler fall weather and the awesome polishes that it seems to beget.  This is definitely one of my favorite fall color combos.  What are yours?

OPI Mustang: Angel with a Lead Foot

Hi, everyone,

I was excited to get my hands on a few of the colors from OPI Mustang 2014, especially because of all the hype about Angel with a Lead Foot being the holy grail white creme formula!  As we all know, whites are some of the trickiest polishes.  Unfortunately, I can't say that this polish completely lived up to the hype.  For me, it went on streaky and needed four coats to even out.  Not that this is particularly horrible as my other whites are the same, but I had been expecting a little bit more ease of application.  Still, it's a nice white creme.

Girly Bits Love Ya Beach! + Orly Jealous Much?

Hey all,

I took advantage of the Sally sale on Orly last month to pick up Orly Jealous Much?  It's such a beautiful green, but I wanted to add some punch and decided to try my very first glitter gradient.  I grabbed Girly Bits Love Ya Beach! from the Llarowe's June A Box Indied.  Here's how it came out:

Girly Bits Love Ya Beach over Orly Jealous Much Glitter Gradient Nail Art

I'm not sure why I waited so long to try this out.  I liked the result, and it wasn't hard to do at all.

Whatcha think?

Independence Day Mani!

Happy early 4th of July, everyone!

Here's what I did for the Independence Day holiday this year... Nothing too fancy, but I like the way it turned out.  Index and middle are Hare A Positive, Ring is Orly FX Silver Pixel, and pinky (and thumb) are Colors by Llarowe Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Independence Day Mani 4th Fourth of July Hare A Positive Orly Silver Pixel Colors by Llarowe Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Hare A Positive, Orly Silver Pixel, and Colors by Llarowe Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
From L to R: sun, shade
Hare A Positive is one of my favorite polishes that I own.  The others were untried, but they both really wowed me!  Orly Silver Pixel went on so easily and densely.  Colors by Llarowe Twinkle Twinkle Little Star was the same.  I usually don't like blues on me, but with all the hubbub of this one being a dupe for the elusive Essie Starry Starry Night, I gave in to the hype.  I'm very glad I did!

Have a great holiday!!
